Malaria in Edinburgh

Abstract
Fifty cases of malaria were treated at the Tropical Diseases Unit, Edinburgh City Hospital, in the 5 years 1965–69. These were approximately half of the cases notified in Scotland. Presentations were varied and in several cases far from the commonly accepted clinical picture of malaria. There were no deaths. One case of falciparum malaria had continued proguanil prophylaxis for 24 days in this country but nevertheless presented with this serious illness. Under 50 per cent (9 out of 21) of the cases coming from Africa were of falciparum malaria.
