Acalculous Cholesterosis of the Gallbladder

Abstract
On studying 3,260 gallbladder operations, 18 cases were found of cholesterosis without stones in the gallbladder. Six of these patients had jaundice. The genesis of this jaundice is obscure, and several different theories have been put forward as to its mechanism. The authors consider that it can be caused by an obstruction of the ductus choledochus, by detached gallbladder polyps, or by stones. Three cases provide support for the theory that spontaneous passage of calculi can occur, and the lack of stones in the gallbladder in some cholesterosis cases can be due to this occurrence.
