Abstract
Following starvation for 130 days the body weight of cod decreased by 30%, the diameter of the red muscle fibres by 15 %(P < 0.001) and that of the white muscle fibres by 40 % (P < 0.001). Coalfish swimming continuously for 42 days at a speed of 0.93 body length (L/see) showed no change in weight compared with controls but the red fibres increased in diameter by 55% (P < 0.001). There was no significant change in diameter of the white fibres. At 2.01 L/sec both the red and white fibres of coalfish increased in diameter (by 61% and 32% respectively, P < 0.001 in both cases) although the body weight decreased by 13% compared with the controls.
