VARIATION IN INTERPRETATION OF INTRAVENOUS PYELOGRAMS1

Abstract
Norden, C, E. Philipps, P. Levy and E. Kass(Channing Lab., Boston City Hospital, 774 Albany St., Boston, Mass. 02118). Variation in interpretation of intravenous pyelograms. Amer. J. Epid., 1970, 97: 155–160.—As part of a systematic study of bacteriuria of pregnancy, post-partum intravenous pyelograms were read by one observer on two separate occasions and then, by a second observer. Neither reader had access to bacteriologic or clinical data, nor to the interpretation of his colleague. Overall, the same observer disagreed with himself 10% of the time and with his colleague 20% of the time in terms of the presence of chronic pyelonephritis. This variation in interpretation of intravenous pyelograms is similar in magnitude to that observed in the evaluation of single and serial roentgenograms of the chest.
