Preparation for Employment in Children and Adolescents with Spinal Cord Injuries

Abstract
Adult employment is an important goal for children and adolescents with spinal cord injuries (SCIs). Adults with pediatric-onset SCI have much lower levels of employment than their peers. Adolescents with SCI often have little experience with chores or part-time work and they transition to adulthood less prepared for employment than their peers. Patients with SCI and their parents need to know, from the time of injury, that adult employment should be an expectation and that it is important for independence and life satisfaction. Children growing up with SCI need to keep pace with peers by doing activities that develop work skills.
