Abstract
The structure of axisymmetric, multipole magnetic fields of the poloidal type in polytropic stars is studied. The magnetic field is defined in terms of a stream function Ψ patterned after the stream function for a current ring. We rederive in a simple way the result that the current involves an arbitrary function of Ψ. By choosing this arbitrary function to be linear in Ψ and involving two arbitrary constants, various families of solutions are obtained by a perturbation method. Fields similar to those recently found to fit the observations are found and the structure of the field determined. Keywords
