Axisymmetric Multipole Magnetic Fields in Polytropic Stars

Abstract
The structure of axisymmetric, multipole magnetic fields of the poloidal type in polytropic stars is studied. The magnetic field is defined in terms of a stream function Ψ patterned after the stream function for a current ring. We rederive in a simple way the result that the current involves an arbitrary function of Ψ. By choosing this arbitrary function to be linear in Ψ and involving two arbitrary constants, various families of solutions are obtained by a perturbation method. Fields similar to those recently found to fit the observations are found and the structure of the field determined.
