Abstract
Focusing on a region that was just being brought under full Administration control, this paper looks at the question of social order in relation to warfare, sorcery, intermarriage, and leadership, including changes in leadership and authority in the new situation. The district is nominally the political unit, but its solidarity is weakened by internal dissension and by competition among Strong Men conforming with the ideal of aggressive self‐assertion. Close social relationships include both antagonism and co‐operation; and this is illustrated schematically in diagrams showing zones of interaction centring on one district. Keywords
