Abstract
The rates of senescence of embryos and aleurone tissues of different-aged wheat was compared. Germination behaviour was used as the primary criterion of embryo senescence and GA3-induced reducing sugar release and α-amylase production were the primary criteria of aleurone senescence. The results suggest that both tissues age independently though at identical rates, and that the primary factor in the ageing process is probably related to a basic aspect of metabolism or intracellular integrity, rather than any functional capacity of the cells. Keywords
