Guidelines for Choosing Appropriate Phonetic Contexts for Speech-Sound Recognition and Production Practice

Abstract
This paper presents some guidelines to aid speech clinicians in selecting appropriate phonetic contexts for their clients to listen to and produce in all stages of speech-sound discrimination and production training. Eight factors which can influence discrimination performances and seven which can influence production performances are listed, explained and described, clarified with examples, compared, and when possible, discussed in terms of experimental evidence. Brief directions for using these 15 factors to formulate discrimination and production-context lists are included and, finally, some implications for research are discussed.
