Abstract
1:2‐Bis‐(phenylamino)‐ethane and N.N′‐diphenylpiperazine are produced by the interaction of aniline and 1:2‐dibromoethane. The nitration and halogenation of various nitro‐, halogeno‐ and acetyl derivatives of 1:2‐bis‐(phenylamino)‐ethane are described. The nitration of the bye‐products, the N.N′‐diphenylpiperazine derivatives, is also discussed. In this case the piperazine ring is opened, so that the same nitration products are obtained from either 1:2‐bis‐(phenylamino)‐ethane, or N.N′‐diphenylpiperazine.
