Abstract
Preventive strategies have only belatedly been recognised in tackling the crime problem. The authors argue their merits, not as a last resort, but as part of a balanced approach, and suggest that the Probation Service is essential to the development of new initiatives. They admit these are controversial proposals but believe that a preventive perspective would aid the task of helping offenders. Keywords
