Abstract
Probably planing is not here to stay. The cosmetic results do not justify its widespread use by dermatologists as a group in patients with scars of all types and causes. It has some applicability in properly selected individuals treated by experienced operators. The procedure is of definite value in externally caused precancerous skin, especially in actinic keratoses. However, this application is limited by the advanced age of many of these patients, the advent of topical chemosurgery, and the comparatively few physicians experienced in the use of dermabrasion in such conditions. At the present time, cutaneous planing may be regarded as a tottering senior citizen stripped of most of the glorious promise of its meteoric youth. Keywords
