The Treatment of Post-Irradiation Infection

Abstract
Results of experiments concerned with the therapy of post-irradiation infection are discussed. A considerable degree of success, particularly with mice, has been obtained in treating post-irradiation infection with antibiotics. A possible explanation is that irradiated animals which were not too severely damaged were carried over the crucial period when their natural defense mechanisms were impaired. Once these had regenerated and could function adequately, the animal was able to cope with bacterial invasion. That this explanation is feasible is borne out by the protection obtained against infection by the injection of bone marrow or spleen homogehates. It is not practical to extrapolate directly to man the results of the experimental work discussed. There is a species difference in response to various methods of therapy.
