Abstract
This article is a review which concludes that ageing of collagen fibers is or may be affected by temperature, mechanical stress, pH, vitamins and hormones. The production of the ground substance decreases with age and may be affected by radiation or corticosteroids. The ground substance protects the collagen fiber. The elastin-like part of the connective tissue loses elasticity with age probably due to increased cross linkages caused by substances with a "tanning" action. Keywords
