NURSES HELPING NURSES: Development of Internal Specialists in Long-Term Care

Abstract
Because many long-term care (LTC) providers feel ill-prepared to cope with the high rate of patients with mental disorders and behavioral disturbances/ outside experts in the field of psychiatry often are sought. This may be only a stop gap measure. A collaborative approach to the care of mentally iII nursing home residents that educates, supports, and empowers nurses employed in these LTC facilities may help them become "internal specialists" on geriatric mental health topics within their own facilities.
