Abstract
The ovipositional response of the Walnut husk fly, Rhagoletis completa (Glesson), was studied using plastic artificial walnuts, soaked in fructose solutions of various concentrations, wrapped in stretched parafilm. Of the four molar concentrations (0.11, 0.22, 0.44, 0.89 M), the 0.44 M (ca. 8 %>) appeared to be the most preferable for egg deposition; the ovipositional response was over 21 times greater than that stimulated by water alone. At the highest fructose concentration tested (0.89 M), the degree of preference was decreased. The potential use of the artificial substrate for testing various chemicals as ovipositional stimulants or deterrants is also discussed. This publication has 15 references indexed in Scilit:
