Brane Cosmologies without Orbifolds
Abstract
We study the dynamics of branes in configurations where 1) the brane is the edge of a single anti-de Sitter space and 2) the brane is the surface of a vacuum bubble in an asymptotically flat space-time. In both cases we find solutions that resemble the standard Robertson-Walker cosmologies although in the latter, the evolution is not controlled by matter on the brane, but by the five-dimensional mass of the bubble. We include a term in the brane action for the scalar curvature and this produces a contribution to the low energy theory of gravity in addition to that provided by the confined zero mode of the bulk gravity. These two effects precisely cancel for the brane action that has been used to regularize the bulk AdS action. Keywords
