Evaluation of training in behaviour change counselling skills: the application of clinical-audit methodology

Abstract
This paper reports on the evaluation of a trainmg course in behaviour change counselling skills which used clinical-audit methodology. Course participants included members of the primary health care, diabetes and dieteties teams working within North Tyneside (N=63). The Behaviour Change Training Evaluation Questionnaire (BCTEQ) was used to assess trainees' acquisition of knowledge and skills. The results of the study suggested that there were some differences between staff groups in the acquisition of skills and that certain aspects of the skills training were more readily acquired across all staff groups. This study has important practical implications for organising future training in behaviour change counselling skills. The study also demonstrated that the method used could improve the effectiveness of the training course through: illustrating the need to tailor training to specific groups; providing information about knowledge and skill acquisition; identifying the length of training required for different course aspects; and identifying the future training needs of trainees. Finally, areas for further research are suggested.Keywords
