Abstract
WITH THE final publication of ISO 14001, the cacophony of claims and counterclaims regarding the nature, use and value of the standard is growing louder. The commentary is wide-ranging, with some of the more noteworthy claims being that ISO 14001:Is a ‘green passport’ signifying environmental excellenceIs a plot by industry to undercut more deserving international Is a plot by consultants to make money out of industryenvironmental initiativesIs a plot by consultants to make money out of industryIs a plot by governments and NGOs to push a ‘green agenda’Should be a basis for eliminating environmental regulation or government oversight of industrial activityfrom value monism to value pluralism.Is useless as a tool for improving environmental performanceDoes not represent the ‘leading edge’ of thinking in the EMS areaRepresents a completely new way of thinking about environmental issuesfrom value monism to value pluralism.Is too complicated and complex for implementation by small and mediumsized enterprisesWill be used as a non-tariff trade barrierWill facilitate trade.
