Abstract
Does the admonition of the parable from the Gospel of Luke the great physician and its implications possess any compelling force today? Are dedication, compassion, humanitarianism too old hat or too square to be vital forces in 20th century America? Was President Johnson speaking to all of us when he said, "So very often 9-5 hours, Saturday at the country club, profit-sharing, and pension trusts all mean so much that the call (of country) is sometimes answered `No'." The answer, I feel, is found in the burgeoning body of Americans of many skills, disciplines, and professions who are volunteering to serve to help those less fortunate in areas abroad that are nonindustrialized and emerging.
