Abstract
The mean particle size of a powder was measured by difuse refflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectrometry. A calibration curve relating the spectral intensities (plotted in Kubelka-Munk units) with the mean particle sizes was prepared. The particle sizes of three commercially available Si3N4 powders were determined by using the calibration curve. The analytical results of two powders with a narrow particle size distribution agreed well with the results obtained with a light diffraction and scattering particle counter (a microtrac analyzer), but that of a powder with a wide distribution did not agree. This method was able to determine the mean particle sizes of Si3N4 in the mixtures of Si3N4 and alumina powders. Keywords
