Abstract
In this article religious education is conceived of as being at home in the culture of the humanities. The nature of the understanding involved is elucidated from this perspective. It involves identifying with different positions and is thus not compatible with the formation of a single identity. Educational objectives should, therefore, be expressed in terms of knowledge and understanding rather than in terms of identity‐formation.Keywords
