Abstract
Focal or diffuse infiltration of lymphoid cells in auto-immune thyroiditis destroys the parenchyma. In the diffuse form (Hashimoto's disease), the clinical picture is characterized by fatigue and thyroid enlargement. The diagnosis is settled by cytology. All patients must be treated with thyroid hormones to avoid myxoedema. Loss of immunological tolerance and cytotoxic immune reactions is discussed. Keywords
