Career Satisfaction of US Women Physicians

Abstract
DESPITE MAJOR changes in the health care system in the past decade, little is known about physicians' current job perceptions or about contemporary factors associated with satisfaction with medical practice. By 2010, 30% of practicing physicians will be women, compared with 8% in 1970.1 This shift will have diverse and far-reaching effects on a traditionally male-dominated profession2-5 because women physicians are more likely to provide preventive health services,6-9 maintain patient relationships that decrease the risk of malpractice,10,11 spend more time with patients,3,12 and have a communication style that improves health outcomes.13
