A Survey of Communicative Disorders in College Vocal Performance and Pedagogy Majors

Abstract
Forty college vocal majors were assessed in the areas of voice, speech, and hearing acuity by a speech pathologist and music therapist. Part-time hearing audiograms were normal for all participants, but an astonishing number of articulation, voice quality, and resonance problems indicative of vocal abuse, misuse, and pathological conditions were discovered. A discussion of the various acoustic parameters of voice disorders, articulatory distortions, and problems of nasality (resonance) is given along with suggestions for awareness and prevention of these disorders by the vocal pedagogist and student.
