Abstract
Presentation of Case First admission. A 58-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of abdominal pain.There was a long standing history of rheumatoid spondylitis, and he had undergone bilateral cup arthroplasty of the hips in his twenties. Three months before admission he began to experience an increase in his chronic back pain accompanied by diffuse, fleeting abdominal pains that were unrelated to food or activity, and he occasionally passed maroon stools. Six weeks before entry severe pain developed in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, with radiation to the back, and he was admitted to the hospital. . . .
