Comparability of Criteria and Methods in the Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Disease

Abstract
A survey of 57 epidemiological studies in the US, concerned primarily with coronary heart disease has been made by the Committee on Criteria and Methods, Council on Epidemiology, American Heart Association. An account of the type of data collected (clinical and laboratory data, diet, physical activity, genetics, etc.) and the methods and criteria used is given. The broad scope and intensity of research is apparent but a considerable diversity in methodology and criteria limits the inferences which can be drawn from comparing the findings of different studies.
