Abstract
A case is reported of Salmonella typhimurium osteomyelitis in a 16-year-old Negro girl with sickle cell-hemoglobin C disease. Previous reviews have suggested that salmonella osteomyelitis develops more frequently in patients with sickle cell-hemoglobinopathies than can be accounted for merely on the basis of chance occurrence. Whereas in the past most such patients were believed to have homozygous sickle cell anemia, a critical review of previous cases reveals that many probably had heterozygous sickle cell-hemoglobinopathies. Since heterozygous sickle cell-hemoglobinopathies may be entirely silent clinically, all patients developing salmonella osteomyelitis should have hemoglobin electrophoretic studies. Keywords
