Comparison of glucose uptake and carbohydrate utilization in red and white muscle

Abstract
Glucose uptake was higher in red than in white muscle fiber groups incubated in vitro, and the precent of label from the glucose uptake appearing in the various metabolic fractions (Percent incorporation) indicated a difference in the patterns of metabolism in the two types of muscle. The percents incorporation of label from glucose into glycogen and CO2 were higher, and into lactate and pyruvate lower, in red as compared to white muscle. When muscle glycogen was labeled in vitro by incubation with glucose-U-C14 and the muscle transferred to fresh, glucose-free medium without label and incubated 60 min., the percent decrease and the absolute decrease in glycogen content were the same for red and white muscle. However, the percent decrease in specific activity of glycogen was 24% for red and 67% for white muscle, again indicating a difference in the metabolism of red and white muscle.This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
