Farmers’ Acceptance of Agri-Environmental Policy Measures: A Survey of Greece

Abstract
The reform of the Common Agricultural Policy includes several policy measures related to the improvement of environmental quality in rural areas. These measures will certainly have a great impact on the development of European agriculture. Part of the success or failure of this policy depends on its acceptance by farmers. This holds especially for southern member states of the European Union where the experiences of farmers in the implementation of agri-environmental policies are very limited if non-existent. Deriving data from a wider project, financed by the DG VI of the European Commission, concerning the competitiveness of European agriculture (CAMAR), this article deals with a survey examining the attitudes of Greek farmers towards two issues: the relationship between agriculture and environment in general and farmers’ share of responsibility in environmental degradation and/or protection.
