Abstract
The hydrostatic head test is discussed with particular reference to the effects of variations in the arbitrary conditions. These include the size of the test specimen, the rate of increase of water pressure, the temperature of the water used for the test, the cleanliness of the water, and the choice of the end-point. Provided that the arbitrary conditions are adequately controlled and the cleanliness of the water is maintained, it is found that three different types of apparatus give concordant results. Keywords
