Personality Disorders and the 3-Year Course of Alcohol, Drug, and Nicotine Use Disorders

Abstract
Alcohol, nicotine, and drug use disorders are highly prevalent,1-3 comorbid with other mental disorders,1,2,4,5 and associated with considerable health, economic, and social burdens. The chronic nature of substance use disorders (SUDs) seen in alcohol and drug treatment settings6,7 continues to present challenges to clinicians and researchers. Identifying consistent predictors of chronic SUDs in prospective studies has been difficult. Some factors suggested in the literature include family history of SUDs8,9 and Axis I disorders, such as major depression10-15 and anxiety disorders.11,12,16,17 However, not all studies have had consistent findings on these relationships.5,17-19
