Abstract
A method is described for the separation of 2 fractions of the ant. pituitary, one of which is rich in the lactogenic and the other in the carbohydrate metabolism hormone. By biological assay methods it is shown that the lactogenic fraction contains about 6666 pigeon units per gm. of lactogen by the McShan-Turner method; whereas the carbohydrate metabolism fraction contains only 125 pigeon units per gm. The carbohydrate metabolism fraction was observed to contain about 500 guinea-pig units of carbohydrate metabolism hormone per gm. by the Bergman-Turner method; whereas the lactogenic fraction contained only 10 guinea pig units per gm. The separate identity of these 2 pituitary stimulated phenomena are thus indicated by chemical separation and biological assay. Keywords
