Renal Carbuncle

Abstract
INFECTIONS of the renal parenchyma extensive enough to cause a conglomerate mass of infected kidney tissue are called renal carbuncles. A renal carbuncle, essentially, is an exaggeration of a cortical infection and, like that condition, is usually caused by a hematogenous spread of organisms, particularly staphylococci, from some other focus in the body.In the past, respiratory infections have, at times, been followed by renal infections severe enough to require nephrectomy. More often, however, severe inflammation of the renal parenchyma is preceded by a staphylococcal infection of the skin, such as a furuncle, paronychia or carbuncle.
