The Public Life of Communities

Abstract
Behavior setting theory was applied to explore the effects of one massive change in the physical environment upon the public environments of six communities in varying proximity to that change. Data taken for six communities well ahead of the establishment of a dam and lake were compared with data obtained soon after their completion. In general, the size and shape of community environments were more affected by change in school law than by the change in nearby geography. Changes in the scope of government settings were apparently created because of the dam and lake, but data did not reveal net increases in business environments.
