Abstract
Rutschmann et al. [1] reported a study showing no activity of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) protease inhibitors (PI) on hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in 19 patients after 8 months of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). They observed a transient increase in HCV viremia and an increase in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) 1.5 months after beginning treatment. Indeed, 32 weeks after treatment initiation, the mean level of HCV RNA was not significantly different from the baseline level. This finding has been observed over a longer period (17 months) [2] and confirmed by others [3–9], but in these studies, HCV clearance was not described. Keywords
