Abstract
To the Editor: In several recent studies a differential distribution of subtype d and y has been found between acute and chronic forms of hepatitis B infections, and it has been suggested that these differences in subtype ratio may be attributable to differences in the virulence of viral strains of the hepatitis B virus. Subtype y is said to be prevalent in acute infections whereas subtype d results mainly in persistent antigenemia or chronic hepatitis (or both).Recently, we reported a shift in the prevalent subtype from d to y in acute hepatitis B infections occurring in 1972 in southwest . . .
