Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole versus Penicillin G in the Treatment of Group A Beta-Hemolytic Streptococcal Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis

Abstract
In a collaborative double-blind study carried out in three institutions, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was found to be safe and effective in the treatment of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis and tonsillitis, but it was inferior to penicillin G, as judged by cure rates and incidence of recurrences of positive streptococcal culture. The latter were considered to be relapses rather than reinfection.
