Abstract
The optical absorption of nascent silver iodide hydrosols prepared by rapid mixing of dilute solutions of silver and iodide salts has been studied in the 350-500 nm region. The heights and wavelengths of characteristic absorption peaks and shoulders of the sols varied with time in a manner depending on excess lattice ion and the protective colloid or the surfactant .spe~ies added. and their concentrations. The different modes of variation of the spectra have been Interpreted as orlgmatmg from different modes of growth of silver iodide sub-microcrystals in the sols. Electron microscopy of the cry tals confirmed thi interpretation.
