The non-identity of Thudichum's ‘glycoleucine’ and norleucine

Abstract
Thudichum"s original specimens of "glycoleucine", the amino-aeid isolated by him in 1882 from the proteins of brain, have been examined (a) for optical activity, (b) by partition chromatography, (c) by treatment with l-amino-acid oxidases of Proteus vulgaris and Penicillium roqueforti, and (d) by the prepn. of acetyl derivatives. They were found conclusively to consist of dl-leucine, not nor-leucine as hitherto assumed. Reinvestigation by partition chromatography of the acid hydrolysate of ox spinal cord indicated the absence of nor-leucine.
