Abstract
At the 1990 annual meeting of the Triological Society, Palm Beach, Fla, P. J. Nicklaus, MD, and colleagues (W. S. Crysdale, MD, S. Conley, MD, A. K. White, MD, and V. Forte, MD), Toronto, Ontario, presented the results of a 3-year study (January 1, 1987 through December 31, 1989) on the development of subglottic stenosis in the neonatal population. The investigation group included 289 newborns, all weighing less than 1500 g at birth, who were intubated in the neonatal intensive care unit. Within this study group three subpopulations were identified: the first subgroup consisted of patients who could be extubated without difficulty (n = 232). The second group, consisting of 50 patients, were those who were successfully extubated, but who required treatment with measures such as steroids, bronchodilators, or diagnostic bronchoscopy.
