Abstract
Scanning Auger microscopy (SAM) was used to study the chemistry of the interfacial region of nickel coated carbon fibers. The interface is exposed by either in situ fracture or by sputtering with Argon ions. From the fracture experiments it was found that the carbon content on the interior nickel wall is double the carbon content in the bulk nickel suggesting the nickel–carbon interface is stronger than the forces holding the carbon fiber together. Keywords
