Spectrophotometric Determination of Nickel with Mercaptoacetic Acid

Abstract
A new method for the determination of nickel with mercaptoacetic acid is described. The method is sensitive down to 0.001 mg nickel per ml of solution and Beer's law is followed up to concentrations of 0.7 mg per ml. The color is stable for several hours and the pH of the solution is not critical as long as it is in the alkaline range. Preliminary separation of nickel by the dimethylglyoxime extraction method eliminates interferences. Sodium citrate, when present in the solution before color development, prevents interference from metals extracted with the nickel during the separation and enhances the sensitivity of the method.
