Blocking Action of Tetraethylammonium on Axon Reflexes in the Human Skin

Abstract
In 15 expts. on 7 subjects, infiltration of skin with tetraethylammonium followed by injn. of acetylcholine inhibited pilomotion whereas controls receiving only acetylcholine exhibited typical pilomotion. In a series of 12 expts. on 8 subjects axon reflex sweating was either completely inhibited or markedly suppressed when acetylcholine was injd. into the spot previously injd. with tetraethylammonium. Control areas not previously treated with tetraethylammonium produced typical axon sweating. The possible site of block and specificity of the blocking effect is discussed.Keywords
