Abstract
Tuberculin-induced lymphocyte transformation was observed in cultures of peripheral blood leukocytes from healthy Mantoux-positive donors, but was low or absent in cultures containing leukocytes and plasma from patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis. Leukocytes from the tuberculous patients were transformed by tuberculin when cultured in normal plasma. Tuberculous serum or plasma depressed the mitogenic action of tuberculin on lymphocytes from healthy donors. The inhibitory effect was not due to the cytotoxic or cytolytlc effect of tuberculin on sensitive lymphocytes. A limited number of tests with other antigens suggested that serum inhibition of lymphocyte transformation was antigen-specific.Keywords
