Abstract
To the Editor: Recently, we have had the experience of a death due to septicemia from Streptococcus pneumoniae in a child with sickle-cell disease after pneumococcal immunization. This 37-month-old black boy had homozygous S disease. Before his death he had experienced an episode of severe pneumococcal sepsis and meningitis at the age of 32 months associated with purpura fulminans. Two months after recovery, he received 0.5 ml subcutaneously of a commercial lot of 14-valent pneumococcal vaccine (Pneumovax); 71 days after immunization, he experienced yet another episode of pneumococcal sepsis and died within hours after the onset of symptoms.
