A Simple Radiographic Method and Epidemiologic Study of Atherosclerosis

Abstract
Lateral lumbar spine radiographs are well suited for the comparison study of atherosclerosis in different populations. A significant difference in the degree of calcification of the abdominal aorta was found in 200 patients from Austria compared with the same number of patients more than fifty years of age from California. Five times as many American patients showed extensive atherosclerosis, about the same ratio as recorded for coronary occlusive disease in the two countries.
