LESIONS OF THE CORNEA AND CONJUNCTIVA IN ERYTHEMA EXUDATIVUM MULTIFORME (HEBRA)

Abstract
This paper is based on three cases of erythema exudativum multiforme in which lesions of the cornea and conjunctiva appeared. I had the opportunity of studying two of the cases in extenso; the third case, details of which are herein appended, was called to my attention by Dr. Benjamin Newman of Brooklyn. The patients presented ocular manifestations that were not isolated phenomena but an integral part of a clinical picture possessing all the attributes of a distinct systemic disease that challenged definite classification. Stevens and Johnson,1 in an article on a new eruptive fever with stomatitis and conjunctivitis, stated that a search of the literature failed to reveal identical cases, and they considered the possibility of a new disease that hitherto has not been described.
