Abstract
We distinguish between two classes of the emeraldine form of polyaniline. Class I consists of materials prepared in the conducting, doped emeraldine salt (ES) form. They form substantially crystalline salts ES-I with the Pauli susceptibility, , of a polaron lattice. Dedoping leads to an amorphous insulating emeraldine base EB-I. Class II consists of materials prepared in the base form EB-II which is up to 50% crystalline. Initial doping occurs in the amorphous region, forming spinless ES-II'. At higher doping, the crystalline component dopes to a new ES-II structure with of a polaron lattice.
