Abstract
This paper outlines a hospital social service program in an isolated, underdeveloped area where public health standards and literacy levels are low, community resources are few, and the cultural patterns are strongly entrenched. Case illustrations have been used to demonstrate unique social situations marginal to the American scene today and the social worker''s role in this particular setting. Keywords
